News Release: Fairfield Medical Center Begins New Medical Residency Program
Fairfield Medical Center is pleased to announce the beginning of its first Osteopathic Family Medicine Residency Program. New inductees for the 2010-2011 Family Practice Residency program include Jessica Conn, DO and Candice Martin, DO.
Jessica Conn, DO, received her medical degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pennsylvania, and received her undergraduate in Biology at Milligan College in Tennessee. She is Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified and is originally from Dayton, Ohio. Conn enjoys playing tennis, listening to music, and has a long-term goal of writing a novel.
Candice Martin, DO, received her medical degree from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio and her undergraduate in Biology at the University of Findlay in Ohio. She is Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified and is originally from Lima, Ohio. Martin enjoys baking, shopping, exercising, reading and gardening.
As a newly established Graduate Medical Education program co-sponsored by the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Family Medicine Residency program provides a unique opportunity for physician trainees who want to help cultivate their clinical educational experience. Innovative curricula and resources such as a new state-of-the-art skills lab will support this program. With low physician-to-resident ratios, trainees will gain valuable hands-on learning experience. While the basic clinical structure of the residency is similar to those participating in the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE), Fairfield Medical Center is emphasizing the following: information technology in daily practice, navigating the business of medicine (including office set up and management), and management/integration of physician extenders in a growing practice using the Six Sigma methodology in the delivery of care.
Dr. Jeffrey Ayers, Director of Medical Education noted, “We have worked hard to ensure that our new residents can get the most out of their experience, working in an unencumbered real world learning environment. We are hopeful that such a program can bring community medicine to a whole new level. Such a program is desperately needed due to the Primary Care Physician shortage we are experiencing nationwide. I look forward to working with both Dr. Conn and Dr. Martin, and I am excited to see this program come to life.” Dr. Ayers also added that the program would not be possible without the help of Dr. Troy Hampton, Residency Director and Janice Brenstuhl, Medical Education Coordinator.
